How it works

Scan. Review.
Save your report.

Open a workbook, see what needs attention, and download the full report. It’s free without login, and your file stays on your device.

  1. Scan your workbook

Open the inspector. Use Browse files or drop an .xlsx workbook onto it.

Turn on Sensitive data search if you want to look for possible personal information as well as hidden content.

Select Inspect workbook to start. Your original file stays unchanged.

  2. Review the findings

Open a finding to see why it was flagged, where to look and what to do next.

Use Go to cell where available to open the X-ray preview at that location. Switch between Normal and X-ray, and use the worksheet tabs to explore the file.

The first five groups appear to start. Choose Show all to see the rest — every finding is included free.

Check the coverage details for anything that could not be inspected.

  3. Save your report

Select Readable report to download a report you can open in your browser.

It includes every finding and coverage gap, even if you have filtered the screen or collapsed a group.

Save the report before closing or clearing the inspector if you want to keep it.

Inspection happens in your browser, with no workbook upload. Read about security & privacy →

Make sense of the findings.

Each result has a text label as well as a colour. Use the explanation and suggested action to decide what needs a closer look.

Amber · Hidden content
Content is hidden from view, for example in a hidden row. Follow the guidance to reveal it and review what belongs in the copy you share.
Blue · Information
Stored details, such as an editor’s name or a comment, may need your attention. Possible sensitive information has its own “Sensitive content to review” label.
Purple · Inspection gap
An area needs a manual check. The report tells you what was not checked, where it is and what to do. If an entire part or an unknown area could not be checked, the heading says “Only partly checked”.
Red · Failed inspection
A file or check could not be inspected successfully. Read the reason before relying on the report.
Grey · Not run / inactive
A check did not run, or a file is still waiting to be checked. For example, sensitive-data search may be switched off, or a batch may have been stopped.

The example uses an invented workbook.

After the scan

Make changes in a copy.

Use the findings to review a copy in your spreadsheet application. Reveal hidden content, check stored details and remove anything that should not be shared.

Save that copy, then inspect it again to see the new results. Workbook Inspector reads the file; it does not edit or clean it for you.

A few useful details.

Which workbooks can I scan?

Choose an unencrypted .xlsx file up to 20 MiB. Old .xls files, macro-enabled .xlsm files and encrypted workbooks are not supported in this preview. An unsupported file is reported explicitly.

What does Sensitive data search look for?

It looks for supported indicators, such as email-like values and recognised column headings. Results show counts and locations; matching values are left out of the report.

Check the switch before scanning. It is off on first use, and your previous setting can be remembered. If you change the setting, inspect the workbook again for an updated report.

What if there are no findings?

The report says clearly when the checks performed recorded no findings. Coverage details remain underneath, so you can see what was checked and anything that still needs review. A check that did not run is not a “no matches” result.

What does the X-ray preview show?

It reveals supported hidden cell content in its worksheet position. Stripes mark hidden rows and columns; amber marks revealed content. Select a cell for its stored value and the reason it was hidden. The preview is included in Free.

It is a bounded preview, not a full Excel rendering. Values stay on this device and are not added to reports.

What is included in the download?

The readable report is an HTML document containing all findings, locations, guidance and coverage records. A JSON version is also available. Screen filters and collapsed groups do not remove anything from an export; Pro batch reports also retain every file, including failures and files not run.

Review a report before sharing it. Matched sensitive values are omitted, but file names, worksheet names, paths and reviewer details can still reveal information.

Can I record who reviewed each finding?

Pro lets you record a reviewer’s name and dated decisions, save a review log, and compare it with a later scan. Reviewer details are entered by the reviewer, not an authenticated sign-off. Free inspection already includes the full single-file report. Compare Free & Pro →

Try it with one workbook.

Every supported check and the complete single-file report. No account needed.
